Preparing for the Lenten Season of Preparation

A national hotel chain once used the slogan, “The best surprise is no surprise.” Apropos of that statement, the Grace Worship Ministry wants everyone to know that there will be special orders of worship for the Sundays of Lent (which begins on February 26). The major parts of the service will be included as usual but the actual order will be different. We are doing this to accommodate a series of services on The Seven Last Words of Our Lord. This series will continue right through Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Each Sunday, there will be both sermon and song centered on these powerful words from the cross and their meaning for our lives in a hurting world today. Please pray that these services will be a blessing for our congregation and our community.

Lent begins February 22, Ash Wednesday. Come and join together as we enter this season of introspection and journey toward Jerusalem with Jesus. The service on the 22nd will include the imposition of ashes and the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. The service begins at 7:00 p.m.

Men’s Retreat

March 2 – 4 at Sky Ranch with Hackberry Creek Church. If you attended last year you know this is a great experience! Food for NEW DAY Teens

We are now filling bags of food for 41 students to get them through the weekends. As a reminder, following are the items needed to fill the bags: Tuna kits, Vienna sausage, pasta meals or soup, 100% juice, shelf stable milk, vegetable in a pop top can or plastic tub, fruit, pudding, breakfast bar, cereal or oatmeal, snacks such as chips, cookies or popcorn and a bag of plastic ware and a napkin. We prefer white low fat milk to put on their cereal. The last time we figured the bags cost about $6-$7 per bag if you would rather give cash. Anything you do helps and we appreciate all the congregation does to help our neighbors get through high school and not be hungry.

Whitney Black’s Guatemala Mission Trip

I wanted to thank you for all the wonderful support I have already received for my spring break mission trip to Guatemala. The more I learn about this trip the more excited I become, as it truly will be a once in a lifetime experience. Our group of fifteen students has raised a little over half of the needed funds for our exciting adventure. This is so exciting for we still have some time before we leave in March. I wanted to of course thank everyone who has been so generous in giving to this experience, and to let you know that this Sunday morning will be the last week for the church wide offering. Please prayerfully consider any donation that you could make to this mission trip, and of course please keep us in your prayers as we move forward in our planning. Thank you. Congregational Annual Meeting

Our annual meeting was held Sunday evening, January 29. Thanks to Encouragement and Nurture for coordinating the evening. After an enjoyable meal of provided ham and shared delicious sides and desserts we held the efficient Congregational Meeting. Pastor Craig Sanders presented a Year in Review slide show set to music that was a wonderful recap of our year (written annual reports were available to take home and read). Additionally, new Bylaws were approved, the financial report was received and the Pastor Terms of Call were approved. The Officer Nominating Committee for 2012 was also elected: Kate Juengerman, chair (Session appointment), Roger Perez (Session appointment), and elected by the congregation are Chip Black, Jerry Bayless, and Ann Livingston. The retiring Session Members and Trustee were recognized by Pastor Craig for their accomplishments and service. Also, Frank Bauerle, Clerk, and Finance were recognized in their efforts to provide the details for the meeting. Thanks to everyone who made it an enjoyable and efficient evening.

Whitney Black Guatemala Mission Trip

The session of Grace is encouraging the members of Grace to support Whitney Black as she goes on a mission trip with the Presbyterian Student Fellowship (PSF) at Vanderbilt University to Guatemala this Spring Break. The attached letter explains more about the details and costs of the trip. Of course we will be supporting Whitney with our prayers and encouragement. We also will have the opportunity to support her financially. I hope that you will prayerfully consider contributing to this trip as we extend the reach of the church of Jesus Christ through Whitney’s service in His name. Envelopes will be available this Sunday and following Sundays for you to contribute to this mission effort.

Unhanging of the Greens

Now that the hustle and bustle of Christmas is slowing slightly, we need to pack up the Christmas decorations at church.

We need many hands on Saturday, January 14 at 1:00 p.m. to assist with re-packing our beautiful decorations for storage. We always need a couple of pick-ups to take boxes to storage and ladders to take everything down. Thank you in advance for your willingness to help! See you Saturday.

Whitney Black Mission trip Support

The session of Grace is encouraging the members of Grace to support Whitney Black as she goes on a mission trip with the Presbyterian Student Fellowship (PSF) at Vanderbilt University to Guatemala this Spring Break. The attached letter explains more about the details and costs of the trip. Of course we will be supporting Whitney with our prayers and encouragement. We also will have the opportunity to support her financially. I hope that you will prayerfully consider contributing to this trip as we extend the reach of the church of Jesus Christ through Whitney’s service in His name. Envelopes will be available this Sunday and following Sundays for you to contribute to this mission effort.

Love through Me Ministries Presentation

Dear Members and friends of Grace,

Last September, I (Pastor Craig) had the privilege on going with Tom Whinery and Serving Him Ministries to Romania. While I was there I worked with two young ladies who serve full time on the mission field there. On Monday night, January 9, you are invited to attend a gathering to meet and hear Stephanie Clinton and Leslie Brotherton and hear about their ministry in Romania. The meeting will be in the youth room at 7:00 p.m. with refreshments. Come and invite your friends to here these two young women share about their ministry. Here is a short blurb from their website and the website address.

“Leslie and Stephanie began working together in March, 2006. After assessing the desperate needs of the elderly in the area, they began developing a program to help meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the forgotten elderly. Hot meals, medicine, transportation, social events, and Bible Studies are all tools that are used to introduce the love of Jesus to these needy people. Women of Grace (WOG) – Join us when we visit the Lords Supper Wax Display

You are invited to visit the “Lord’s Supper” Wax Display and “Wall of Christian Crosses” at the Christian Arts Museum in Fort Worth on Saturday, December 10 at 10:00 a.m. Meet at Grace Presbyterian Church and Carpool to Ft. Worth (please be punctual). Admission is free. RSVP is required; sign-up sheet is at the WOG Bulletin Board.  RSVP sign-up deadline is Sunday, December 4. Group Reservation is at 11:00 a.m. “The Lord’s Supper” wax display is one of the contributions to the religious culture of Fort Worth. Two well-known California artists were commissioned to create the exhibit for Fort Worth. The Katherine Stubergs, mother and daughter, worked for about 18 months on this project. The elder woman, who has since died, spent untold hours placing the human hair in each head of the disciples and on the head of Jesus and in their beards–some 40,000 strands of human hair in each (see leaflet on WOG table for more information).  Wall of Christian Crosses is made of puddle bronze and copper and was designed by Rachel Joy Colvin, Fort Worth Artist, sculptor, and calligrapher. One of the many crosses you will see is the Cross with Alpha & Omega, England 14th Century. Lunch (Optional): After the museum tour and eat at  M&O Grill, 200 Carroll Street #11, Ft. Worth, TX, (817) 882-8020. Everything on the restaurant menu is delicious, but you have to try one of the eight different M&O old-fashioned burgers topped with Chef Danny’s famous burger sauce! Winner of the Fort Worth Weekly Readers’ Choice for “Best Hamburgers”. The restaurant adjoins to the Leonard’s Department Store Museum and admission is free. Year-End Bonuses

Donations for Year-End Bonuses are again being collected. This is continuing the tradition that has been utilized by Grace the past few years. A collection container will be in the narthex to receive donations from the congregation on the Sundays of December 4, December 11, and December 18. (The last day to receive collections will be Sunday, December 18 to allow time for depositing and processing.) Bonuses will be divided equally among Gerry Askew, Julie Bayless, Gehlin Menti, Dianne Priest, and Pastor Craig Sanders. The Personnel Ministry appreciates your support in saying thank-you!

Soul Sisters Sunday School Update

This Sunday, Nov 13, we will wrap up our study of “Who Stole My Church”. Please read Chapter 21 and the Epilogue to prepare for our final discussion. The following Sunday we will start a new study, “Psalms – Prayers of the Heart”. Our study books are in and are available in room 109. We would like to take this opportunity to invite all our Soul Sisters at Grace to join us for this new study.
